Cheers to All

July 30, 2009 Aaron Leave a comment

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to all who’ve been discussing The New Horror Handbook and who have also understood the intentions behind it. Your kind words mean a great deal to me.

I’ve been hearing from some awesome people lately, from a variety of different places. Cheers to the folks on the Horror-Movies.ca forum, from the many Ginger Snaps fans in particular (I KNEW there had to be a number of you), and everyone else who has dropped me an email or checked out The New Horror Handbook Facebook page. (Did I mention we have a Facebook page?)

Some more NHH-related info to come, so stay tuned.

New Horror Handbook at Festival of Fear

fof_09If you find yourself at in Toronto Aug. 28-30, don’t miss your opportunity to check out one of North America’s premiere horror conventions: Rue Morgue magazine’s Festival of Fear. While you’re there, you can also pick up a copy of The New Horror Handbook at the Rue Morgue booth.

If you’re feeling particularly enterprising, why not get the Rue Crew to sign the chapter about Rue Morgue magazine? Go on — when are you going to get the chance again?

What is the ‘New Horror’?

Occasionally I’m asked what exactly I mean when I say the “New Horror.” Here is a brief explanation from the introduction to The New Horror Handbook:

Though disturbed minds can disagree…the New Horror is a film released in the last several years that delivers on one or more of the following:

1. Aesthetic appeal. No matter how vicious the on-screen carnage, even its most disturbing scenes are rendered in a stunning, and unexpectedly appealing, way. The French sensation Inside (above) is a good recent example of that.

2. An underlying message. And no, “stay the hell out of the woods” does not count. Rather, the movie uses an extreme style or story to underscore issues that affect a great many of us today.

3. Hidden depths. The film’s multilayered approach to its story and/or execution rewards repeat viewings with a greater understanding of the tale and its message.

‘New Horror Handbook’: Finally available!

NHH_coverWord came late last night that The New Horror Handbook has finally been printed.

And a cry went up in the home offices of NHH central… Well, a lone cry, because due to unforeseen circumstances, art director Pamela Norman wasn’t around to celebrate.

But yes, The New Horror Handbook was delivered, cleaned up, and smacked on the ass by the doctors/printers in attendance, and will be shipping soon.

Thank you again for pacing this delivery room waiting area with me all these many months — you’ve all made the wait that much more endurable.

Here, have a cigar.
